11 Days East London – Hogsback – Grahamstown – Addo Elephant National Park – Port Elizabeth
Take up the challenge and mountain bike your way through the stunning scenery of the Eastern Cape province. On your way you can experience South African Xhosa culture from up close and learn about the history and animals of the area. It’s a tough adventure but there is also time to relax: we include a guided game drive in Addo Elephant National Park and a river cruise in Port Elizabeth.
Everyone taking part needs to be in good general health and moderately fit. You should be able to cycle about 30 to 60 kilometers a day on dirt tracks and mud roads. You should also be satisfied with the range of accommodation, from premium to standard and camping. Youngsters are welcome but need to be at least 16 years and accompanied by an adult.
You are given a mountain bike and helmet in the magical village of Hogsback. For one day you will practice riding the mountain bike, accompanied by a guide. From there on you are good to go! You stay in a range of accommodation, from premium to standard and camping. We have all your meals covered, including a daily packed lunch that you carry with you to eat along the way. Sometimes you stay in traditional Xhosa rondavels and eat traditional Xhosa meals. During the whole adventure there is a guide by your side and a back-up vehicle is a call away.
The pick-up point is East London Airport from where Smiley Face Tours will transfer you to Hogsback. Here you practice for a day after which you cycle through the indigenous forests of Hogsback and down into a rural part of South Africa in the direction of Grahamstown. You’ll face a hard climb up into this historic town where you, off course, be allowed to catch your breath. In Grahamstown you cycle through one of the townships, known to locals as Rini, and pass historical sites like Makana’s Kop. The next few days we head towards Addo Elephant National Park camping grounds after overnighting in rural town Riebeeck East and passing through numerous nature and game reserves. In Addo we’re not allowed to cycle, for obvious reasons. Therefore we relax during a guided game drive before ending the adventure just outside Port Elizabeth. Here you return your mountain bike, clean up and head to the river for a farewell cruise! Smiley Face Tours will then transfer you to Port Elizabeth Airport to catch your flight.
The mountain bike adventure can be done all year round except for December.
